Edificio Ferrocarril: A Small Railway Building in Mondéjar

The Edificio Ferrocarril is a small brick-built building situated on the outskirts of Mondéjar. It’s in such good condition and looks so clean it would be easy to mistake the Edificio Ferrocarril for a building that’s only been recently built. It’s actually quite old.

The Edificio Ferrocarril was originally constructed to provide temporary accommodation to railway workers out working on the tracks but no trains have passed through Mondéjar in many years. The tracks are long gone and what used to be a railway is now a green lane road for walkers and cyclists to enjoy.

The railway tracks were laid during the early 1900s. They connected Mondéjar to Orusco and the first passenger train made the journey on March 27, 1916. A second line was added later. It ran to Anguix, a distance of 55 km, and shortened the commute time between Tajuña and Aragón.

The Edificio Ferrocarril has outlasted the railway tracks that necessitated its creation and, although it’s not possible to take a look inside, it’s still an interesting place to see. Especially during the summer months. It looks very picture-postcard-like standing with it’s back to the golden fields of corn. If you are a selfie-lover, the Edificio Ferrocarril could be a good spot to take make a snapshot to commemorate your visit to Mondéjar.

If you ever visit Mondéjar and decide to check out some of the local sights you’ll find the Edificio Ferrocarril easy enough. It’s just a short walk from the Convento de San Antonio.
