The D991 at Neuvic, France

When I Go Walking I’m Sometimes Surprised by the Things I Find

Dear Travel Diary

I’ve been in France for around two weeks now and most of the days have been cloudy and grey. There’s been a lot of rain.

The weather here is very different for the weather I got used to enjoying in Spain. There have been a few nice days though. Today was one of them so I took some time off from my computer and went for a walk.

The town I’m living in is situated between two large regional parks (Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne + Parque natural regional de Millevaches en Limousin). The countryside is amazing and there are lots and lots of trees.

When I go walking I seldom have a plan. I just pick a direction and walk. If you do that you can never be sure what you will find. Today I found a grave beside the road. There was no mistaking what it was. It had a headstone and flowers.

In the UK, when someone dies in an accident their friends and family often leave flowers near the place where the accident happened. I’ve seen the same thing done in many other countries as well and have to wonder if the grave beside the road marks the spot where someone died. I guess I’ll never know the truth, but it seems a strange place to spend eternity.
